The Clara and Iris Book Series
This book series is dedicated to my mother, Mary, and her best friend, Billie Sue, whose friendship spanned the better part of fifty years and inspired the characters of Clara and Iris. I had the privilege of riding in the backseat of the car, as both a child and an adult, as they went on many of their adventures, most of which involved searching for the perfect piece of antique furniture desperately in need of stripping, sanding, staining, and varnishing. This usually occurred on Saturday mornings and was fondly referred to as antiquing. I am now the proud owner of one of my mother’s prized pieces, an oak buffet, which held my father’s scotch, a mason jar of white lightning moonshine that he only brought out on special occasions, and my mother’s linen napkins used faithfully at every meal. My fondest childhood memories are of Billie Sue’s home which always smelled of a pound cake in the oven because someone in town was always feeling poorly or had just lost a loved one, and of my mother working in her lovely flower gardens, either weeding them, or planting bulbs which would surely delight everyone later as they bloomed in all of their glory. There is a little of each of them in both characters. Oh, what fun to have known the real Clara and Iris!
